The person who controls and manipulates Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee for a living will join him at Brown University, effective Jan. 1.Kate Wolford will continue as Gee’s assistant during his presidency at Brown. Wolford, 28, schedules and coordinates Gee’s day to day activities, putting in more than 60 hours per week.”It is a lot of work and details being Gordon’s assistant, but he has a system of doing things that has contributed to his success and he has helped make my job much easier,” she said. “My job is the care, feeding and protection of E. Gordon Gee.”Wolford has been Gee’s assistant for nearly four years. She worked at the Ohio Statehouse as a legal assistant before coming to OSU in 1993 to work for Herb Asher, OSU’s former director of state relations and current advisor to Gee.”Gordon is much more intense than anyone I’ve worked for,” she said.Wolford said Gee has an incredibly high energy level, “it exhausts you to watch him.” Gee said of Wolford, “She’s very good at what she does, she’s very sensitive. We’re very lucky to have her coming to Brown.”A lifetime resident of Upper Arlington, Wolford has seven older brothers and sisters, each an OSU graduate. Her family is supporting her decision to work at Brown. Wolford said she will miss her friends, family and OSU when she leaves. “OSU has been a big part of my life, but it is time for a change,” she said. Wolford takes classes at OSU, but is not sure which career she wants to pursue.”It’s just an adventure and a good change for me,” she said. “It’s scary and exciting to leave, but I’m excited to get the show on the road.”Her decision to go with Gee was easy. “Gordon told me if he was going, I was going with him,” she said.Wolford’s fondest memories of Gee are his practical jokes. For example, on Halloween, he wore ‘bubba teeth’ around the office and during meetings and couldn’t keep a straight face.”It’s the silly stuff like that makes working for him so much fun,” she said.Wolford’s greatest memory at OSU was standing on the field during the OSU-Notre Dame football game in 1995.Her worst day at OSU was on June 27, 1997, when Gee told the staff he was leaving. “I knew something was happening when I saw that he didn’t have his Block O pin on his lapel. It was very upsetting, I was very sad.”She said she knows a few people in Providence, R.I. and has been there several times.”Providence is very expensive, but it is so beautiful,” she said. She is an avid reader. The first thing Kate does before she reads the New York Times is to turn to page three and read the Tiffany’s ad, Asher said. She does go on to read the rest of the paper, he added.
