Post-game partying can be ‘a riot,’ so the Columbus Division of Police is increasing security in the off-campus area this Michigan weekend.Paul Denton, commander of Columbus police zone four, which includes the campus area, said extra officers and increased patrols would be part of the additional security. “If Ohio State wins, there will be a lot of celebrating going on,” Denton said. “It’s up to the people if there’s going to be a problem or not.”Plans are in place in case of trouble. Riot police won’t be lined up on the streets, but they will be available if needed, Denton said.Denton said that there will be more routine patrols on Friday, while on Saturday many officers will leave their cars to patrol campus on foot.Liquor laws will be strongly enforced this weekend, he said. Undercover agents from the Ohio Department of Liquor will be out on both nights. Large keg parties will be targeted on both nights, he said. To avoid arrests, those hosting parties should check their guests’ identification and only allow those of legal drinking age to drink, he said. Past conflicts with police have left some 12th Avenue students wondering if the added police force is necessary. “I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Jill Bemer, a sophomore majoring in physical therapy. “It will happen whether they (the police) are there or not.”Angie Bunker, also a sophomore in physical therapy, agreed with Bemer.”I’m sure there will be trouble, but seeing all the police just gets people worked up,” she said.
