The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts will give spectators a peek at Chinese culture, stylized acting, detailed makeup, fancy masks and spectacular action in its presentation of The Peking Opera’s “Entertainment Beyond Imagination Tour”. Filled with a diverse array of performances that include juggling, sword throwing and amazing acrobatics, the “Entertainment Beyond Imagination Tour” is definitely not typical opera. Although the entire production is in Chinese, there is an American-Chinese mistress of ceremonies to interpret the action of the stories, co-producer Don Hughes said. The Chinese performers of The Peking Opera are trained from ages 9 or 10 and continue to learn and perfect the art throughout their lifetime. The art is a combination of action opera and a type of high-pitched singing. The opera is comprised of four short excerpts performed by the 50-member cast. “The Sword is a Gift from Bai Hua” is an interpretation of a tale about a warlord’s attempts to overthrow the government and how his daughters actions doom the struggle.”Stealing the Stored Silver” depicts a scene from the Chinese fairy tale, “The Story of the White Snake.” The scene is about two snakes descending from heaven and then transforming into beautiful young women. The women attempt to steal silver so they can build a clinic for the poor. “Li Kui Visits His Mother” is an excerpt about the relationship between a peasant revolt leader and his blind mother.”Havoc in Heaven,” the final excerpt, is packed with action and acrobatics as the journey of a Buddhist monk and three disciples is depicted by the full cast of actors, Hughes said. Hughes said The Peking Opera is on its second tour of the United States. It will not differ much from its first run ten years ago. The Peking Opera will perform tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre in the Riffe Center, 77 S. High St.
