Scenes from popular movies like “Sixteen Candles” and “Swingers” are now showing in Shadowbox Cabaret’s current production, “Blockbusters at the ‘Box.””The scenes have the same flavor of the movies, yet the acting is made bigger for the stage,” said actor Tom Cardinal, who acts in a racy scene from the movie “Chasing Amy.” “Costumes are similar to what the characters wear in the movie and we stay close to the actual script,” he said. The actors auditioned for the production, and those that best captured the true essence of the movie were chosen, Cardinal said. “The skit from ‘Chasing Amy’ is in-your-face and explicit,” Cardinal said. “It receives a big reaction from the audience.”Shadowbox Cabaret is a comedy theater that features live performances consisting of short plays and original comedy sketches. Usually a crowd of 120 attend the production, which is consistently sold-out, said David Whitehouse, Shadowbox Cabaret spokesman. The production is so popular because the skits are short and diverse, Whitehouse said. There is a skit to please everyone, he added.”Shadowbox Cabaret give the actors the opportunity to explore a million different artistic endeavors,” said actor Mark Slack, who currently plays Jack Nicholson’s “slimy grease ball” character from the movie “The Witches of Eastwick.” The show also includes performance from the Shadowbox Cabaret house band BillWho?, which features cover tunes from rockers like Jimi Hendrix and Simon & Garfunkle, in addition to some original music.Currently in its fourth year, the Shadowbox Cabaret, 232 E. Spring St., includes an ensemble of more than 30 actors and actresses who also serve appetizers and drinks to guests, as well as cook and clean, Whitehouse said.
