Racism continues to be addressed
I am writing in response to Michael Norman’s article on racism. First of all, I would like to thank Michael for addressing this issue. It is an elusive entity that some try to grasp. I do have some views that I hope will contribute.First of all, it is important to define certain terms to keep the philosophical waters clear.Equality: the quality or state of being equal (Webster’s p.391).Racism: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race (Webster’s p.962).Now, the issue of racism is complex. As with anything, racism can be broken down to be dealt with more easily. Where is the root of the problem? I strongly believe that it resides in each and every individual. We are all brought up with different values. It is the responsibility of the individual to inventory those ideas and values in an unbiased manner. Isn’t part of the reason that we are here (OSU) the search for truth? It saddens me that certain individuals act cowardly, maliciously, etc. But, we can’t fall into the trap of believing that those actions of a very few are representative of the whole. I was assaulted by a “gang” of black kids and I fought those ugly feelings also. You have buried truth and imprisoned yourself in hate if you allow yourself to be consumed by anti-race, religion, etc. ideas. I challenge people of all creed and color. First, challenge yourself, be honest. Second, don’t allow family, friends, anyone around you to express hate messages in any context. If you witness it and let it go unscathed, then you have joined the ranks of the racist. You can hardly complain about something to which you have contributed.
