When the dust finally cleared Sunday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, seven Buckeyes had new cities to call home. Orlando Pace and Shawn Springs were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, followed in later rounds by teammates Rob Kelly, Ty Howard, Mike Vrabel and Matt Finkes. Nicky Sualua, who was ineligible to play last year due to academic problems, was also drafted.Pace was selected first overall by the St. Louis Rams. After donning the cap of his new team for the media in New York, Pace flew to St. Louis to meet new head coach Dick Vermeil.’Orlando is the guy. Orlando is going to set the pace in St. Louis,’ Vermeil said.Pace described his anxieties prior to being selected. ‘Basically, not knowing where you are going causes sleepless nights. Now I got to get in (to the Rams camp) and get my technique,’ he said.’You talk about not sleeping at night,’ Vermeil responded. ‘I’ll sleep much better with this guy.’The Rams’ main concern now is signing Pace, who likely will demand a robust package for his services.’He’ll deserve the money,’ said Vermeil.’I think my career has been filled with expectations,’ said Pace. ‘I expressed to my agent that I wanted to get into camp on time.’ After Southern California’s Derrick Russell was taken second by the Raiders, Springs was grabbed by the Seattle Seahawks with the third pick. Seattle had traded for this draft pick prior to the draft in order to get him.’Going up to get Springs was a gamble a few weeks ago, but they got their corner from Ohio State,’ said Mel Kiper, ESPN draft analyst.’I always wanted to grow up and be like my father, a professional football player,’ Springs said. ‘I always thought about this day.’After Seattle took Springs, they traded up in the draft again and took Florida State offensive lineman Walter Jones. These two gambles will pay off instantly, according to draft analyst Joe Theisman. ‘I think they’ll (Seattle) contend for the AFC title next year.’Safety Rob Kelly was taken 33rd overall by the New Orleans Saints, cornerback Ty Howard was taken 84th by the Arizona Cardinals, defensive end Mike Vrabel was taken 91st by the Pittsburgh Steelers, fullback Nicky Sualua was taken 129th by the Dallas Cowboys, and defensive end Matt Finkes was taken 199th by the Carolina Panthers.Dimitrious Stanley, Greg Bellisari, Matt Calhoun, Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller, and Juan Porter were not drafted, but can still pursue an NFL career through the free agency route.
