Student dislikes gay advertising
Yes, Spring is certainly right around the corner, but I sincerely hope more advertisements like the recent “Columbus Eagle Bar” one I saw in the Lantern are not. There’s nothing like opening up the paper to find a picture of some shirtless guy covered with sexual innuendo laying in a cute little bed of flowers. Now, developing more of an open mind towards and being more tolerant of lifestyles different from my own has been something I’ve really been working on since I began college. However, things like the aforementioned ad really make it hard.”Young buds waiting to be picked” and “fresh gogo-boys” are listed as some of the attractions. Are you kidding me? If you are looking for a place to go and “sprout your bulbs” or “plant your seed,” then this club must be the place. Give me a break; I can only imagine what kind of emotionally starved people they’re aiming to attract.I’ve had a few close (closer-than-I-care-to-be) encounters with gays in my time here at OSU, most of which could enable myself to file the dreaded “sexual harassment” charge. I’m just grateful that I had the wisdom, not to mention sense of humor, to shrug them off. But trying to put myself in gay shoes does not seem to further my understanding of the logic behind such advertisements. Perhaps a more professional and less hormonal appeal to readers could help. Maybe this type of ad is what gay people like, I don’t know. Or maybe, could it be, that I’m just not quite “open-minded” enough yet?
