Students do not always like GECs
In response to Carrie Jones’s “enlightenment” of Dave Dewees’s editorial on the French illiterate, I have decided to enlighten her on a common issue. Few students enjoy every one of their GEC requirements, and most of us will complain about some class. You said, “You (Dave) have to WANT to learn the language.” I feel Dave has the right not to want to learn the language, and a right to put forth a solution for helping those who are French impaired. I too was forced to complete French 104, and just like Dave, I stumbled through 101-103 and encountered some difficulties in 104. Now that I am finished with French (forever), I realize the objective and values of learning French. During certain movies I am now able to explain French concepts to my wife and I can sometimes get the $100 and $200 questions in French on Jeopardy. You want Dave to stop complaining? When I tell other students that I am a math major, I usually hear groans. The groans are often followed by long stories about how much this person hates mathematics, and how they are pissed-off about some Math 150 class that they had to take twice. So as long as I have to hear complaints about math classes, I will continue to complain about French. More power to ya Dave, O revwa and Marcee bocu.
