Today is the day that Ohio State baseball coach Bob Todd has waited for a long time. At 2:00 p.m., Todd and the 1997 Buckeye baseball team play their first game at new Bill Davis Stadium against Eastern Michigan.Bill Davis Stadium, built at a cost of $4.7 million, will seat 3,000 people and by far will be a more enjoyable place to watch a baseball game than the old stadium. For those who have ever watched a game at Trautman Field, walking into the new stadium will be an experience to remember.Ohio State has moved from a old broken down Yugo to a brand new top-of-the-line Cadillac. As bad as Trautman Field was, it did give the Buckeyes a home field advantage. In the last 31 years, Ohio State’s record at Trautman Field was 424-201.The Buckeyes have had an ability to field winning teams even with sub-par facilities. A new building should bring Todd more wins. Todd came to Ohio State in 1988 after spending four seasons at Kent State.Since Todd’s arrival at OSU, he has produced five Big Ten regular season titles and three Big Ten post season championships. While that feat is impressive, the fact that he has been able to guide OSU into five NCAA regional tournament appearances, twice finishing one step away from making the NCAA world series tournament field is even more impressive.By being able to do this at Ohio State, where it only seems to be warm in May, and at a field that is not acceptable for some high school baseball programs makes his accomplishments even more amazing.Todd gives as much credit to his players for his accomplishments.’It is great for the young freshman and sophomores and also the seniors who survived here, they will be rewarded by getting to play in the stadium,’ Todd said referring to his players who have waited for a chance to play in a real ballpark. The ability to have a winning baseball program in a northern climate is remarkable considering most of the power-houses in college baseball are either in the South or on the West Coast.Every year the top teams are Florida State, Miami (Fla), LSU, Mississippi, Stanford and other California schools. But, Bill Davis Stadium will provide Todd the opportunity to recruit better players, players who would previously look at Trautman Filed and would have backed off coming to OSU and gone to one of the warm climate teams. For Todd and the rest of the baseball squad, Bill Davis is a long time coming.
