After hearing that ABC was going to do a remake of Stephen King’s “The Shining,” I thought that it could never compare to the original movie that starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, but I was wrong. After watching the first two episodes in the three-part series, I realized that the miniseries is actually more true to the novel that King wrote in 1977, and goes much deeper to relay the ideas that King wanted to portray of the characters and the Overlook hotel in the story. The cast for the miniseries, which includes Rebecca De Mornay as Wendy Torrance, and Steven Weber (the Wings’ guy) as Jack Torrance, doesn’t quite compare to Nicholson and Duvall, but there is enough talent to do an adequate job is this instance.”I’m really impressed by the special effects and the story line that the miniseries has,” said Greg Schalfman, a senior majoring in environmental science. “But there was something that Nicholson gave to the original movie that is missing with the miniseries.”The miniseries thus far has tended to stay in line with the story that was portrayed in the book much more than the original movie. The book, which portrayed the Overlook Hotel as an extension of hell, used much more visual imagery to postmortem occupants that inhibit the Overlook. The miniseries definitely attempts to do this better than the original did.The miniseries uses the notion of the Hedge shaped animals that stalk the Torrance family. The hedge animals were a important part of the novel, but were ignored in the original film. The fact that the miniseries strives to stick more to the novel is probably the biggest asset that production has.”The differences between the original movie and the miniseries are subtle,” said Brad Jones, a senior major in public relations. “I like that the miniseries gives a different look at this terrorizing story. Stephen King is an incredible story teller.”The final episode which airs tonight at 9 p.m. on Columbus’s ABC affiliate WSYX channel 6, is sure to throw some twists and turns to the climatic finish that builds throughout the story that will be quite interesting to see.
