Last weekend’s series against Michigan left OSU baseball coach Bob Todd concerned about the team’s offensive production.Mike Lockwood and Jason Trott, in Wednesday night’s game against Youngstown State, led the team in a powerful display of hard-hitting baseball which may get the Buckeyes untracked.”We got some of our timing back,” Todd said. “We are not, however, playing at our full potential offensively as a team.”Lockwood, who slammed the ball out of the stadium on the first pitch of the game, set an aggressive tone for his teammates.”I was lucky enough to get a good pitch,” Lockwood said. “I typically don’t try to knock the ball out. I’ll settle for line drives and let the big hitters do the rest.”Trott followed Lockwood’s lead and stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and ripped a grand slam to center field.”The pitcher sent a fastball down the middle and I got a great hold on it,” Trott said. Trott struck again in the bottom of the sixth, ripping a solo shot to center field, his second home run of the game. The team went back to the basics this week in practice, focusing on aggressive hitting, hits up the middle and hard line drives, Lockwood said.OSU, overall, produced an impressive offensive game with 12 hits and seven runs. Lockwood, Dan Seimetz, Trott, Jason Turner, and Matt Middleton all finished the game with two hits while Mike Carek and Mike Kremblas both added one.”We have too many good hitters to fall into a slump,” Trott said. “We need to get the runners on base past home plate.”We need to wait for the right pitch,” Todd added. “When the players finally get it, they’ve got to be more aggressive with the ball.”OSU improved significantly against Youngstown State and expects to keep that momentum going for this weekend’s series against the Big Ten’s first-place team, Illinois at the Bill Davis Stadium.Todd hopes the performance in last night’s game will motivate the team for this weekend.”Illinois has good pitching,” Todd said. “We’ll continue to work hard this week and we’ll see how we come out of this weekend.”
