USG will be presented with an Excellence in Student Government Award this weekend at the 1998 National Association for Columbus Activities Convention.’This award was based on what USG had accomplished in the past year,’ said Kevin Cope, USG cabinet member.Ohio State’s USG was the national winner in the category of large public universities. They will accept the award from the NACA at the convention in Indianapolis Feb. 15. Some of the accomplishments of USG included the COTA initiative, hosting President Clinton and Vice President Gore and a voter registration guide.OSU’s Community Commitment program will also receive an award at the NACA convention. They will be presented with the Distinguished Service Learning Award. The Community Commitment program, a student-run project, was held during Welcome Week this year. There were 1,200 volunteers that took part in the project, and they visited 13 sites around Columbus.’The volunteers performed a variety of activities from clean-up to working with children,’ Colin O’Brien said, co-chair for Community Commitment.Schools throughout the country submit applications for the award.’I think what made our project so appealing was the number of people involved and that it was entirely student-run,’ O’Brien said. ‘I believe this award is a testament to how seriously OSU takes community service.’
