A night of improvised music at Hughes Hall Auditorium takes over and leaves you waiting moment to moment, not knowing what will happen next.The OSU Department of Music & Music Education will present “An Evening of Improvised Music” on Sunday, a concert of duets including “Sonic-Co-Motion,” exploring the music of Tom Kanthak and Dr. David Means. Beginning at 7 p.m., the night will feature “music by the minute” using acoustic and electronic processing in a real-time compositional environment. Other instruments such as the flute and the piano will also be included during the performance.”The evening will contain all original and new music rehearsed that will be improvised on the spot,” said Kanthak. “The music may leave you confused, but definitely not bored.”The concert also includes musical duets with dancer Kristina Isabelle, visual artist Chris Murray and flutist Jonathan Bayley. “We react off each other creating a conversation using dance and sound,” Isabelle said.Throughout the night a combination of either rock, polka, jazz and classical music may emerge at any time during the evening, Kanthak said. Kanthak has been involved with music for dance for over 20 years as a composer, choreographer, dancer and teacher. He has performed as a musician for dance in many areas in Minneapolis, including the Walker Art Center and Hennepin Center for the Arts. He is currently working on his masters in Music Education here at OSU. “An Evening of Improvised Music” is one project contributing to his music thesis.Co-performer Means has created numerous intermedia arts projects for concert, stage, broadcast, gallery and site-specific performances installations at Documenta (Kassel), Roulette (New York), and the Xi An Conservatory of Music (China). He is currently an Associate Professor of Media and Fine Arts and artistic director of the Nobles Experimental Media Studios at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn.Kanthak and Means will be presenting two lectures and demonstrations on their method of creating improvised music for dance at the 11th annual NOW Music Festival today at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Capital University’s Huntington Hall.
