A Columbus woman claiming she was kidnapped on the Ohio State campus two weeks ago confessed Wednesday that she fabricated the incident to University Police.Lisa Ann Mercer, 27, admitted fabricating the story after officers investigating her alleged kidnapping expressed doubt about her claims during a meeting with Mercer, said University Police Chief Ron Michalec.’The investigators didn’t feel good about her story, and when they asked her about it she said it was false,’ Michalec said. ‘At this time we’re not really sure why she did it though, because we have not discovered another crime that she was trying to use this story to cover up.’OSU police had been concerned about Mercer’s story, especially because this was only the second kidnapping reported on campus since 1990, Michalec said.’I would be negligent if I said I was not concerned about this,’ Michalec said. ‘It is very positive for the OSU community to know there’s not a predator out there.’Mercer had previously told police she was kidnapped Jan. 14 by a black male outside of Morrill Tower while working as a route driver for Sanese Services Inc., a supply company which provides goods for OSU vending machines. She said her kidnapper hid inside her truck and attempted to assault her when she climbed inside. She claimed she escaped to a nearby gas station where she called police, Michalec said.Mercer did not explain to police why she invented the story, Michalec said.James Lanfair, security director for Sanese Services, said Mercer is no longer employed by Sanese, but he refused to comment on whether or not her story was related to problems at work.Mercer was charged by police with falsification of a police report, which is a first-degree misdemeanor, Michalec said.Mercer was later released, but is scheduled to appear before the Franklin County Municipal Court Feb. 14.Mercer could not be reached for comment.
