Campus Partners purchased three more south campus properties Thursday and has its sights on acquiring the Newport Music Hall and Panini’s Bar and Grill buildings next week.A federal bankruptcy court affirmed contracts and set up bid meetings Thursday afternoon in order to sell properties owned by Al DeSantis. DeSantis, who was once the largest land owner in the campus area, declared bankruptcy after years of legal problems. Although many of his holdings have already been auctioned, he still owns several campus area properties, including the Newport and Panini’s. The properties are being sold by Fred Ransier, a trustee chosen by the court.During the hearing, bids from Campus Partners were accepted allowing the organization to purchase the property housing Tomorrow’s Image Beauty Salon, a parking lot at 45 E. 11th Ave. and the building formerly housing B.K. Flyer’s bar. Campus Partners will be using these properties in the Gateway project, a redevelopment project on seven acres of south campus land. Terry Foegler, president of Campus Partners, said no demolition is planned in the near future.”Tenants will stay in their buildings until the projects are further along,” he said.Including the DeSantis properties, Foegler said Campus Partners will own 50 to 60 percent of the land needed for the Gateway project in the next 60 days.Campus Partners is about two weeks away from choosing three final developers for the redevelopment project. Ten developers are being evaluated, two local and the rest national. Detailed proposals from the final three will be ready in early 1999.”I am very pleased with the quality of interest on both the local and the national level.” Foegler said.Another south campus DeSantis property to be auctioned is the Panini’s Bar and Grill building. Panini’s owner, John Massimiani, made a preliminary bid of $450,000 to buy the building, and Campus Partners bid $470,100. The auction will begin Tuesday at 10 a.m.Campus Partners would like to be the new owner of the Newport Music Hall, but three other investors have also bid more than $1.4 million for the property. The bid meeting for the Newport will be Thursday morning in Ransier’s office.
