Despite the 16th century setting, “Ever After” is definitely a 1990s style Cinderella story. Drew Barrymore brings a new feisty attitude to the character, named Danielle, who is anything but your average damsel in distress. Raised by her wicked stepmother, Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is forced into the life of a servant, tending to the every desire of Rodmilla and her two daughters, Jacqueline and Marguerite. But Danielle`s life takes a turn for the better when she makes the acquaintance of Prince Henry. Henry is not the stereotypical knight in shining armor. Throughout “Ever After,” is a new twist to the old fairy tale. Danielle is often the one to come to Henry`s aid. She has an independence and beauty that turns the head of the prince.”Ever After” adds yet another innovation to the story by portraying Danielle as a headstrong, almost tomboyish young woman. She is not afraid to speak her mind, even to Henry, when she disagrees with him, which intrigues him even more. She is also a more athletic and energetic Cinderella, carrying out the hard labor of the farm chores and servant`s duties with ease.Although her life is not a happy one, Danielle finds her match in the young Prince Henry, who happens to be looking for a wife. Rodmilla, however, is not about to let Danielle ruin her daughters` chances to marry the prince, which leads to a host of problems for Danielle. But the prince`s heart is controlled by forces Rodmilla cannot corrupt, bribe or fool. This new Cinderella story is a definite love story, with excellent acting and absolutely breathtaking sets and costumes. Shot on-location in France, the castles and countryside are one of the best features of the movie, as are the beautiful costumes. Particularly eye catching is the masquerade ball scene, held at the palace by the royal family. The scene involved hundreds of extras and loads of makeup and costumes, but the effect is exquisite.”Ever After” is a fantastic movie for those who like to see justice eventually prevail, even though it may take a few unexpected turns along the way. The ending is not as predictable as one might think, much like the entire plot. Although the film is worth seeing just for the scenery, the updated storyline and good acting make it an excellent movie for young and old alike. Some might call it a “chick movie,” but it in fact is simply a well made love story that both men and women can appreciate.
