With the release of “The Waterboy,” Adam Sandler is once again in the spotlight. But it hasn’t gone to his head. “I’m not really involved in much that goes on in Hollywood,” Sandler said. “I just hang out with my friends and make these movies. I kinda mind my own business.”Sandler is as funny over the phone as he is in his movies, taking part in a conference call to colleges across the country Nov. 3.Sandler said his college roommates were the writer, director and producer of “The Waterboy,” and they had a great time making the movie.”We have fun, we hang out, we’ve known each other a long time and know what makes each other laugh and what pisses us off,” he said. “It feels like family.” When Sandler compares himself to Bobby Boucher, the lead character in “The Waterboy” he says he has been on the receiving end of jokes, but he has also been the jerk.”It was fun writing this movie,” Sandler said. “There were a lot of different ways we could have gone with this movie. We had 10 different scripts, we all had our own views of what this guy would go through, but we ended up with this one.”Sandler said at 17-years-old, his brother talked him into being an entertainer because he had nothing else to do. He said when he was young, he used a Charleston Chew bar as a microphone and “sang to my mommy.” Sandler is a genuinely nice guy, he likes anyone that says yes to working with him. He makes his movies, not for the rewards, but for the audience to have something to laugh at.”I just hope that people come and have fun, that is why we make these movies,” Sandler said. “When I was growing up, I liked being able to go to a movie with my buddies and my family. Have fun and laugh, and talk about the movie afterwards, that is basically what we are doing with these movies. We make sure that we put enough laughs and enough moments for people to enjoy together.”Sandler speaks very highly of his “Saturday Night Live” experience.”We all kinda grew up there, me and my friends who were on the show,” he said. “We learned a lot about comedy, learned a lot about ourselves and what we were good at. This made us concentrate more on writing and that was a good tool for everyone.”Sandler said that he especially liked his “SNL” character ‘Canteen Boy’ and compared him to ‘the Waterboy.'”There are similar qualities the Waterboy and the Canteen Boy share,” Sandler said. “They both love water, they both have been abused a few times in their day, and are both not sure how to react to that abuse. I think that is as close as I am coming to doing any of the old stuff. You never know what the hell is going to happen.”Sandler said he tries to make sure that there are parts in his movie for old “SNL” members.”I like hanging out with friends, so I always try to write something that I know I am going to get at least a few days to hang out with a buddy of mine. I’ll write something, call them up, tell them, and these guys come out.”Sandler said he does not think there will be sequels to his movies.”By the time that you get done with a movie, writing it, shooting it, editing, and putting it together it’s like a year of your life,” he said. “So it is pretty good to move on to the next thing.”Sandler is currently filming a movie in New York City, called “Big Daddy,” and working on a new comedy album, both due out next year.
