As faculty and staff members at Sisson Hall await the arrival of their new home they are slowly preparing for the demolition of their current one.Parts of Sisson Hall, 1900 Coffey Road, will be demolished in August so a new building for the College of Veterinary Medicine can be built in its place. There are two parts to Sisson Hall: a section built during the 1950s that will be demolished and a 1987 addition that will remain and be connected to the new building. The section scheduled for demolition can’t support modern research because of the building’s ventilation and plumbing problems, said John Hubbell, associate dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The cost of demolishing the old section of the building and constructing the new section is about $23.2 million. The state will contribute $21 million to the project and the College of Veterinary Medicine must raise $2.2 million, said Jill Morelli, university architect. The actual construction of the new section will cost $18 million. Demolishing the old section, furnishing the new section, asbestos abatement fees and building permits will account for the remaining $4 million, said Carol Olshavsky, the designer of the new section from the architectural firm of Braun and Steidl. The College of Veterinary Medicine will provide its share of the money by collecting donations to the project.”Currently we are looking for a donor who we can name the new building after,” Hubbell said.Departments currently in Sisson Hall will not move into another building during construction. Offices in the sections to be torn down will move to areas of Sisson Hall that are free from construction so that no department will have to leave the building until construction is finished, Hubbell said.”In terms of size the new building will be smaller, in terms of effectiveness it will be the same,” Hubbell said. Some features included in the new building are research laboratories, a library, computer labs and a recreation area, Olshavsky said.Parts of Coffey Road will be shut down permanently by the Sisson Hall project. There will be side roads to provide access to the buildings on that street, Hubbell said. Coffey Road will be cut off at the south end of the Veterinary Hospital and a curb will be cut from Herrick Drive to the south side of the hospital.Construction of the new section will begin in August when demolition of the old section is complete. The projected date of completion is February 2002.
