As students attend their classes, workers at the Stillman Hall construction site are slowly changing the face of the Ohio State campus. Workers for the Stillman Hall addition said the project is going great. This crew, who are employees of Cody Ciegler construction company, started work on the Stillman Hall addition eight months ago, said Curt Paul, a supervisor for the company. During this time they have had very little interaction with students, except to wait for them to clear their path.”Kids don’t get out of the road fast enough, when they do get out of the road. You can’t yell at them like you would the ones at home,” said Mark Shaner, a 38-year-old carpenter and father of three. To keep up with the growing needs of the College of Social Work, a wing is being added to Stillman Hall. The new part of the building and the old one will be connected, said Ronda Griffith-Grubb, administrative secretary to the dean of the College of Social Work.Currently there are about 550 students (undergraduates, masters and doctorate students), 30 faculty and 18 staff members in the College of Social Work, Griffith-Grubb said.Because of the lack of space, the college has faculty offices in Lord Hall and teaching assistant offices in Ramseyer Hall.”When the new wing is complete everyone will be in the same building,” Griffith-Grubb said. The cost of the $5.6 million addition to Stillman Hall is entirely state-funded, she said. Curt Paul, a 30-year-old carpenter by trade, is in charge of general construction, which accounts for $2.8 million of the total cost, said Jim Kane, project manager for Cody Ceigler. The remaining portion of the $5.6 million will go toward other areas of the project, such as plumbing and electricity.Paul said he is indifferent to campus life and never considered the idea of going to college.”My dad was a construction worker, all my brothers are construction workers; this was my summer job,” he said.Paul, who was promoted to supervisor seven years ago, said construction is a ‘decent’ paying job. He said the average salary for a construction worker is about $20 an hour. The average day for workers at the sight begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m., including a one-hour break.”The work is hard physically and mentally,” said Walter Bodnar, a 35-year-old carpenter. “You’re gonna be a college graduate aren’t you? Why don’t you try to read a set of blueprints and see how far you get,” he said.Paul said working on OSU’s campus can be more difficult because of the bureaucracy involved.”Working on campus is different from other jobs. There is a lot more red tape you have to go through the university and the state. [With] other jobs you have one person to deal with,” he said. However, he said he is accustomed to working on campus.”We worked on the Lane Avenue sports-field, Doan Hall,” Paul said. For David Stafford, a 57-year-old carpenter, traffic and parking on campus is one of the biggest challenges.”After you get where you’re going it’s OK,” he said.Kane said the Stillman Hall project, which is scheduled to be completed in January 2000, is going according to plan.”The project started off really well; the weather hindered us, but we are back on track,” Kane said.
