The new Universal Picture release, “EDtv,” stars an unambitious video store clerk played by Matthew McConaughey. His life is chosen as the topic of a cable TV show and abounds with celebrities like Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Hurley, Ellen DeGeneres, Jenna Elfman and Dennis Hopper.Similarly, the soundtrack for the film contains songs from many celebrities, old and new. Old musical stars like James Brown, Al Green, Barry White, and Otis Redding are sprinkled amongst newcomers such as Meredith Brooks, Cornershop, Muzzle and Barenaked Ladies. Somewhere in the middle of the new and the old stars, fits Bon Jovi, a band whose musical talent could only survive in the eighties. Their new release, “Real Life,” is the first song on the soundtrack. Much like their other tunes, the over dramatic lyrics and classic eighties sound, seriously date this song.Meredith Brooks performs, “Careful What You Wish For,” which features her great guitar playing, punchy lyrics and sassy sound, making it one of the better songs on the track.Peter Wolf’s performance of “Turning Pages,” is pretty upbeat. The song makes you want to get up and do something as he sings, “My life’s moving on, turning pages,” so optimistically. The older artists sprinkled throughout this track seem somewhat obscure amongst the new folks. However, I have to admit, Al Green’s “Here I Am” and The Inmates’ “Dirty Water,” did inspire me to break out the imaginary microphone and sing for a moment.Overall, the soundtrack lacks continuity and excitement. It seems as though the songs complement the movie far better than they compile for a soundtrack.
