As the construction to add on to Stillman Hall continues, some Ohio State students have mixed views concerning the improvements on campus.”I am kind of sick of construction in general,” said Ben Thompson, a senior communications major. But Mike Valo, a freshman business major, said he likes what they are doing to modernize the facilities.”I really don’t like old buildings,” he said. “I think they should do this to more places on campus.”The addition construction, on the West 18th Avenue side of Stillman Hall where it intersects College Road, began last May. “We will be done with everything around the end of February in 2000,” said Steve Galli, the project architect. With this addition there will be four new floors and seven new classrooms.”They are pool classrooms, which means they will be available to all the different colleges for any classes,” Galli said. The rest of the floors will be designated for office space for various colleges.”Basically, the layout is pretty simple,” said Glenn Funk, director of facility planning.According to Funk, the first floor will be all classrooms and the second floor be classrooms, a University Technology Services public computing site and office space for the College of Social Work. The third floor will be more offices for social work, and the fourth floor will be more offices, but they have yet to be assigned to a college. Although construction is taking place, room 100 is still being used for lectures.”[The classroom] is in operation currently, but will be shut down during the Summer Quarter. It will be reopened for Autumn Quarter, though,” Galli said. When it reopens, it will have a newly redesigned lobby, which will offer more space, he said.Stillman Hall’s renovation and construction will cost about $5.6 million, but the cost to OSU is minimal.”The tab is being picked up by the state of Ohio,” Galli said.Every two years, the state officials look at proposals from the university on buildings which need to be work. Then they decide which projects they would like to fund. The state decided to fund the Stillman Hall addition in 1992. About $5.3 million of the Stillman project is being funded by the state. The other $300,000 came from local accounts that the university holds.
