The Ohio State football team suffered a blow Tuesday when it learned that two-time All-American offensive guard Rob Murphy is ineligible for the upcoming season.OSU Athletic Director Andy Geiger said Murphy is academically ineligible and has been dismissed from the university.”I felt badly that this is such a missed opportunity for Rob,” Geiger said. “Part of being a good team member is being eligible.”To be dismissed from OSU students must exceed 15 deficiency points. After accumulating 15 deficiency points, students are put on academic probation and can be dismissed at the discretion of their particular college or school.Deficiency points are earned when a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0. The number of deficiency points a student earns is equal to the number of points it would take to bring their GPA to a 2.0.On Monday offensive coordinator Mike Jacobs said he did not know Murphy’s Spring Quarter grades or whether he would be eligible or need to take summer classes.”Obviously I’m hoping he’s going to be eligible,” Jacobs said.He said the team has been on break for the last week and a half and is just beginning to return for summer conditioning. The two-time All-American sociology major from Cincinnati did not practice with the team during spring drills because of academic problems. Murphy could not be reached for comment.Jacobs added that he hoped to find out whether Murphy needs summer classes to be qualified. Last summer three OSU football players, Damon Moore, Andy Katzenmoyer and Rob Murphy, had to attend summer classes in order to be eligible to play football in the fall. All three made the necessary grades and were eligible for last season. Katzenmoyer and Moore left OSU for the NFL and were drafted in April.Fifth-year senior defensive end Matt LaVrar said he learned of Murphy’s dismissal from the university in his sports for spectators class.”It happens at a university or a place like this,” LaVrar said. He added that it happens to athletes and non-athletes alike. He did say it would hurt the offensive line and other players would have to step up to fill Murphy’s shoes. The Bucks will look to several different players to fill the open spot. Junior Mike Gurr saw 80 minutes of playing time last season and practiced in place of Murphy during spring practices. Another possible replacement is left tackle Tyson Walter who logged 261 minutes, and LeCharles Bentley who was on the field for 63 minutes in 1998-99.
