Those who are pregnant, experiencing back pain, run the risk of heart attack or simply underage should attempt the pilgrimage to Ohio University for Halloween weekend at your own risk. The Ohio State Student Code of Conduct that was recently implemented says that students could be punished for trouble they cause anywhere off campus and the police at OU will be six or eight to a block. With about 95 percent of people arrested at the Halloween festivities not from OU, Athens’ finest will be looking for visiting underage witches and warlocks to arrest.Students run the risk of detention, but even a greater risk of wondering where they will be detained. The available jail space has been greatly reduced because the usual drunk tank in Nelsonville, Ohio will not be housing anymore misdemeanor offenders.Arrested trick-or-treaters will be thrown in the old Athens County Jail. This old haunt only holds 60 people. Last year more than 200 costumed crazies were booked. Students not only run the risk of having to pay the city of Athens court costs, but who knows where the police are planning to put them. Athens itself is a scary enough place to be any day of the year without having to worry about being held in the garage of an Athens local, or worse yet, in a pawn shop basement occupied by the Gimp. One thing that is for certain, however, is that visitors will have almost nowhere to park. Campus parking lots will be shut down and no one without an OU permit or student registration will be permitted to park in the lots. The police have said there will be no parking available at all anywhere on campus. It is obvious that law enforcement will not be happy to see anyone come into town. It is true that OSU police officers will not be in Athens for the day of the dead, but state Liquor Control agents will ready and waiting. If at all possible, OSU students should stay away from hilly roads and anxious police of Athens. The Halloween weekend at OU can be a mighty tempting road trip, and if attempted, should be taken with the greatest precautions.
