The name String Cheese Incident might sound cheesy, but look beyond to the music and the experience at 8 p.m. Thursday at Newport Music Hall.String Cheese Incident combines bluegrass, calypso, salsa, Afro-pop, Calypso, jazz, latin melodies, funk, rock and reggae into one unique experience. “Everyone in the group has different interests and we fused it together,” said Michael Kang, a member of String Cheese Incident.The Colorado-based quintet consists of Michael Kang on violin, electric and acoustic mandolin; Kyle Hollingsworth on piano, organ and accordian; Keith Moseley on the five-string electric bass and four-string acoustic bass; Bill Nershi on the six-string acoustic guitar and Michael Travis on percussion.Every concert is described by band members to be an experience. String Cheese Incident constantly changes their songs to keep it fresh and interesting, which includes keeping the stage alive with music for about three hours each concert. “We are just getting warmed up an hour into the show,” said Kang. “String Cheese Incident is all about putting energy out to get togetherness and unity.”String Cheese Incident is not an ordinary band. They have their own record label, SCI Fidelity Records.”The record label is our creation. We have control over every aspect,” Kang said. “We love and trust the people we work with.”In addition to the record label, String Cheese Incident also owns an in-house ticketing service and a travel agency that caters to their fans. “We are not an MTV band. We’re not into this to get rich quickly. We want to provide a good experience for the fans,” Kang said.String Cheese Incident started playing festivals out west and has only recently started playing the college scene. “We play festivals, bars, theaters and auditoriums,” Kang said. “The audiences are a great size no matter where we play.”String Cheese Incident’s latest release is “Round the Wheel”, and a new release for a double live CD is slated for January 2000. Currently titled “Carnival ’99,” the CD was recorded during the winter and spring.”Touring is like a traveling circus. It’s like living the life of a carnival worker,” Kang said.String Cheese Incident has many exciting concert dates for fans to look forward to. Chicago will come alive with the sounds of the band Thanksgiving weekend and Portland will be ringing in the new millenium with String Cheese Incident. Tickets for the concert on Oct. 14 are $12 and can be purchased at the Newport Ticket Office or from Ticketmaster.
