The new movie “Girl, Interrupted,” starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, tells the story of a girl’s recovery from suicidal depression, sexual promiscuity, and drug abuse while in a mental institution surrounded by women deemed “insane.” The movie identifies the healing and destructive power of friendship in a ward of women in the care of Nurse Valerie, played by Whoopi Goldberg.”Girl, Interrupted” is not a “feel good” movie. It tries to reach the viewer at a personal level to show that seriously ill people need the love and support of friends and, but can’t always be cured by peer-intervention alone. The professional help of doctors, therapists, and nurses is sometimes necessary for true recovery.Lisa, played by Jolie, portrays a sociopath that has been institutionalized for over eight years. She is funny, and brings a rebellious attitude into the ward. She is also defiant and disobedient. Susanna, played by Ryder, slowly finds herself falling into Lisa’s habits. The stronger the friendship becomes, the more she submits to Lisa, and regresses until her recovery eventually stops. The movie shows that sometimes people outgrow their friends that hold them back from becoming a strong individual capable of dealing with life. It sends the message that people need to move on with their lives and choose life over death.Ready for an upbeat movie? Don’t see it. Is it the female version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest? Maybe. Ready for another semi-deep, low-key, Winona Ryder movie? It starts showing in theaters, Friday Jan.14.
