In a movie theater at 5:30 p.m. there are no lines, no trouble with parking, and no problems finding a seat. It is still light outside and the theater is virtually empty except for families with children and over 65-year-old couples out on dates. Once the movie starts, the previews contain no foul language, no killing and no sex. A dinner-time matinee is the most appropriate time to see the new movie “My Dog Skip.” The movie is set in 1942 Yazoo City, Miss. Willie Morris (Frankie Muniz) is a young 8-year-old boy that has no confidence and no friends until a puppy is given to him as a birthday present. The bond between owner and pet is immediate. Through the love, unbounded affection, and confidence of the dog, Willie finds the courage to socially develop. This movie shows the preciousness of childhood and life and summertime memories. It is narrated by Harry Connick Jr.. Connick’s voice is slow and lazy and has a southern twang that is perfect for the film. In an age that exploits sex and gore on film, this movie reminds adult viewers of their own childhood. It’s a nostalgic film that glorifies pure and simple things such as holding hands with a girl or boy for the first time, playing and becoming filthy with friends and pets, and summer evening suppers and bedtime. The cast is wonderful.Muniz is perfect for the lanky, awkward, “Willie Morris.” Kevin Bacon plays the sheltering father, that tries to protect his son from feeling any pain. Ellen Morris, played by Diane Lane, is Willie’s assertive mother who desperately seeks a way to pull her son out of his shell, eventually buying him a puppy.
