Fans of heavy metal, techno, rap and combinations of all genres of music will love “The Family Values 1999” CD. The album features live performances from last year’s tour which includes artists such as Korn, Filter and Limp Bizkit. The CD was recorded during Biloxi, Miss., and Kansas City tour dates. The album, although recorded live, sounds as if it was taped in a studio. The only hint that it is a live show is the sound of the crowds roaring in the background of every performance. Every song on the CD is very clear and concise with one exception. Primus’ crowd favorite “My Name Is Mud” did not sound as clean as the other recordings. The banging of the bass that goes on throughout the song drowned out the majority the vocals. The song sounded as if it was taped with a hand-held recorder that an audience member snuck past security.Method Man and Redman were the two names on the album that looked out of place with the likes of Korn and Filter, but these two rap superstars held their own. They were the only performance on the recording that used turntables instead of guitars. The two gained a blaring response from the crowd for their two-minute performance of “Rockwilder” while improvising and belting out the well-known Cypress Hill lyrics “Sawed off shotgun, hand on a pump….”.One of the best performances on the CD came from Staind as they sang their hit “Mudshovel.” The heart-pounding guitar riffs throughout the track did not overpower the vocals, which were clear and lucid. This is one tune listeners will be able to sing along with.Limp Bizkit, a headliner for the tour, dominated the CD with four songs and a bonus track featuring Fred Durst. The album featured the hit song “Break Stuff,” the supposed cause for the Woodstock ’99 riots. When listening to this track, one can visualize the crowd moshing to Durst’s screaming and an electrifying guitar in the background. Other songs featured were “Nookie,” “I Would For You” a ballad that shows Durst’s true vocal ability-and “Outside,” a slow, heart-wrenching song that Durst performed with Aaron Lewis of Staind.Korn and Crystal Method also gave notable performances on the album. “Falling Away From Me,” with its eerie introduction and hard hitting lyrics was a definite highlight on the CD. “Keep Hope Alive,” by Crystal Method gave the CD a touch of techno that will have the rave generation smiling and dancing. This is a really well-made CD. Even with the few recording mediocrities, like Primus, the CD was still a big hit. Anyone with a weak heart for profanity, heavy guitar and wailing vocals should stay away from this one. Those who saw the show and want to relive it or just couldn’t make it to the show should go to the store and buy this CD now.
