If you’re wondering what ever happened to the good ol’ visceral live music experience, you’ve not been paying attention. The local music scene in Columbus features some of the best original bands around, but goes unnoticed and underappreciated by most students. Take local ska band Fenster. They’ve just released their self-released second album, “Causing Problems.” The band held a live concert as a promotion for the new album on Friday at Little Brother’s on High Street. The new album is somewhere between EP and LP, featuring five new songs and two live tracks. The album begins with a tongue-in-cheek techno introduction, then segues directly into “Green,” a lively ska original. The record continues with the band’s funk-peppered ska, with songs like “Meltdown,” a live performance of “Fly as Chuck,” and a couple of covers, Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” and the Beatles’ “Help!” While the album is a great bit of plastic to have hanging around your stereo, live performance is truly the strength of the band. They began with their mock-techno entrance to fake smoke and baseball shirts, then exploded into “Take Yo P.O.,” off their self-titled first release. The band continued to keep the crowd stirred up, playing a 17-song set, mixing in all their new material. Lead singer Paul Robinson has a great-sounding voice, and even breaks out the didgeridoo on occasion, adding new spice to the music. Roman Kravec supplies the ska guitar, and Ed D’Angelo adds the funk element on bass. The horn section features Mark Baruth on saxophone and Brian Yarbrough on trumpet. Dave Newman rounds out the group on drums. The band is playing shows around the Midwest to score a much-deserved label contract. Fenster has made it all the way out to Chicago, and played all over Ohio and Indiana. The show was wonderful, with a stand-out effort by another local musician, Ian Hummel, of Poop House Reilly. The band is normally a trio, but he played an acoustic set on his own. With songs like “My Favorite Jackson,” (Tito, by the way) and “Vinnie Barbarino,” his unique style of “Booty Shakin’ Comedy Country Rock” is something that ought to be experienced by everybody. The whole band plays on Friday at the Northberg Tavern. Give Poop House your money. Fletch took the stage next, playing good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll originals, proving that the opening band doesn’t have to suck. All this for a measly $5. Feeling cheated? Don’t worry, you’ve got the chance to catch Fenster at Oldfield’s on High Street this Friday. Go see Fenster. Buy their albums, buy their tee-shirts and stickers. Support your local bands. Give that cover charge you’ve got burning a hole in your pocket to someone who deserves it, not to some crappy club deejay who plays the same songs you’ve heard all week on the radio.
