High Street will see the opening of three new businesses including a gourmet sandwich shop, a Mexican restaurant, and a coffee shop by January 2001.Chipotle Mexican Grill will open its ninth Columbus location in the space next to the Newport Music Hall, formerly The Smiling Rhino, said Kevin James of National Realty Services Inc., the real estate brokerage firm that owns the property. James said new businesses like Chipotle, whose management is completely renovating the interior and the exterior of the space, “will improve the look of High Street.”Jimmy Barouxas, manager of Buckeye Donuts, said he isn’t worried about the future of his eatery, but he questions the prospects for new small businesses on High Street. “It will be harder for small businesses to get in the scene,” he said, adding that the new chain businesses are “going to take away from the character” of High Street. Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop will open its second location in Columbus just a few blocks away from its first location near Lane Avenue and High Street. The new location, at the corner of E. 15th and High, was formerly part of Brenen’s Coffee House.Scott Morse, owner of Brenen’s, said he decided to rent the space to Jimmy John’s because simplifying his business would allow more time for other projects, like the catering portion of his business. In addition, Morse believes the sandwich shop, which primarily does its business at night, will be a nice complement to his coffee business. The competition of a new coffee shop, Morse said, is “not something we put much of an emphasis on.” He said that in the 15 years Brenen’s has been open, the focus has always been “how we can make our business the best we can be.”Starbucks Coffee will open its ninth Columbus area store in the new building adjacent to Urban Outfitters at the corner of E. 14th and High Street, said Bill Courson, community development director of Campus Partners.Although not involved in recruiting the new businesses to the campus area, Campus Partners was responsible for the exterior design of the new Starbucks. This was done in order to match its appearance to Campus Partners’ design guidelines for High Street, said Steve Sterrett, a Campus Partners spokesperson. The only businesses Campus Partners works with are the ones affected by the proposed University Gateway Center, such as Apollo’s restaurant, Courson said.Jimmy John’s is scheduled to open soon after the Thanksgiving break, Morse said. Starbucks will open near the end of November or the beginning of December, Campus Partners said. Chipotle will open shortly after the first of the year, James said.
