True love, devotion, magic and royalty. You can see all this and much more in the play, “The King Stag,” presented by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts and the Wexner Center for the Arts at the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theatre. Written by 18th-century playwright Carlo Gozzi, “The King Stag” will be performed by the American Repertory Theatre and will feature the masks, costumes, puppets and choreography of Julie Taymor. The story of “The King Stag” is about a young king who is in search for a woman who will love him for who he is and not because of his royal title. He uses magical spells to transform himself into a stag and then an old man. While in these altered forms, his true love learns to care for him despite his changes and the king’s dreams are made a reality. This play will be the first of Taymor’s theater productions to be presented in Columbus. It will also be the Ohio debut of the American Repertory Theatre’s national tour.   “The company doesn’t usually tour this widely and it is a great treat to have them here,” said Charles Helm, director of performing arts for the Wexner Center. Helm explained that the Wexner Center is also very excited to have the works of Taymor being presented on stage in a live performance. Taymor might best be remembered for “Julie Taymor: Playing with Fire” a retrospective exhibit presented by the Wexner Center last year. This exhibit featured many of Taymor’s works including those from “The King Stag” and from Disney’s “The Lion King” on Broadway.  Helm also explained last year’s exhibit was extremely successful and the Wexner Center hopes that the fans of Taymor will now be able to see her work as it is used in a performance.  “‘The King Stag’ is one of the company’s flagship productions,” said Kati Mitchell, director of press and public relations for the theater. Along with this play being very familiar to the company, the actors cast in the play are seasoned veterans, all of which studied at the American Repertory Theatre’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training, explained Mitchell. She continued saying, the actors were aided in their training by being in films and having toured abroad. With the experience of the American Repertory Theatre and the creative talents of Taymor, the Wexner Center and CAPA hope to present a production to remember. The performances will be held tomorrow at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets 431-3600 or at the Wexner Center Ticket office 292-3535.
