What is the main ingredient in the recipe for the success of a new pub?”Well, you want to have good ‘craic,'” said Tommy O’Shaughnessy, the proprietor of the newest in bars and restaurants springing up around Nationwide Arena. “Not to be interpreted as the ‘crack’ that will get you 10 to20 years in prison, either.”According to O’Shaughnessy, “craic” is an Irish term to capture the individual and personal atmosphere that each pub in Ireland – and now one in Columbus – has to offer. O’Shaughnessy’s Public House, located right next to Buca di Beppo, in front of the Nationwide Arena opened its doors for business on Nov. 24.O’Shaughnessy believes his Irish pub is in a premium location at what many would consider to be the latest hot spot for Columbus restaurants, but said his restaurant has special claims to the land.”When they dug the hole for Nationwide Arena they found plates, saucers and basically every day household items from Irish of the 1800s who settled in Columbus for jobs on the railroad during the famine in Ireland,” O’Shaughnessy said. “Right here at this restaurant is the epicenter of the beginning of the Irish-American experience in Columbus.”O’Shaughnessy’s Public House exudes an authentically Irish atmosphere from the light fixtures to the floor which were all made in Ireland by Irish craftsmen.”Everything we have here was made in Ireland,” said Patrick Fagan, the bar manager at O’Shaughnessy’s. “It was all shipped over on seven barges to New York City and then brought here on trucks.”Knick-knacks such as old books and teacups, also imported from Ireland, are referred to at O’Shaughnessy’s as “brick-n-brack” and adorn the restaurant to bring a spirit of Irish hospitality.”One area of the restaurant is called “the Cottage” and has a very home-like atmosphere with a real fire place and rocking chair,” said Sarah Boyd, a server at O’Shaughnessy’s. “We are really promoting a close, friendly environment. It is not a pushy atmosphere at all. We want people to feel like they can stay.”Although sports bars are popular, O’Shaughnessy’s will have a TV on only for special events.”O’Shaughnessy’s will embrace the art of conversation,” O’Shaughnessy said. “The TV won’t be obtrusive to this. I want people to enjoy conversation, not stare at the tube.”As a descendant of one of the original Irish families of Columbus, O’Shaughnessy is obliged to honor those immigrants and the culture of Ireland.”To celebrate the Irish immigrants of Columbus, we will display old documents passed down from the O’Shaughnessy and other Irish families such as marriage licenses, old passports, and family photos to show the Columbus Irish experience,” O’Shaughnessy said. The impact of the Irish on the history of Columbus will be further recognized with a special Irish brew made exclusively for O’Shaughnessy’s by the Columbus Brewing Company.”We’re calling it “O’Shaughnessy’s Dam Good,” O’Shaughnessy said. “Named for my great-grandfather who built O’Shaughnessy’s Dam by the Columbus Zoo in Dublin.”Patrons can also help themselves to a pint of Guinness and a variety of Irish inspired entrees.”Sarah’s Shepherd Pie which is lamb and vegetables, corned beef and cabbage, and stews are on the menu,” Fagan said. “They are all recipes passed down through the O’Shaughnessy family.”O’Shaughnessy hopes his restaurant will be a celebration of the history and culture of the Irish while offering Columbus restaurant and pub-goers a warm and happy environment.”This restaurant is not only a landmark but a great place to share a pint with your friends,” O’Shaughnessy said.
