To quote an out of date jam commercial, “With a name like Poop House, it has to be good.” Columbus band Poop House Reilly are one of the area’s best, and their new release, “The Beloved Songs of Poop House Reilly,” is undeniable proof. The band combines elements of rock, country and a heavy dose of comedy, creating the sound that is Poop House rock. Their album is full of belly laughs, which comes via tremendous lyrics and catchy rhythms. The album begins with “Vicky the Vegetarian,” which sounds lke your average traditional Johnny Cash song, but when the chorus kicks in you can’t help but laugh. On the next track, “Feets,” a song about a woman’s big feet, the attitude and sound of the music changes and we get some distortion pedal electric guitar and a more traditional rock rhythm. The album is also peppered with a couple of mock love songs. A particularly funny song, “An Ode to Cheese,” sounds like a classic country love ballad – except for the lyrics. Other songs on the album include “The Sexual Innuendo Blues,” “Summer of ’85,” an especially inventive parody of Brian Adams’ “Summer of ’69,” and “Big Fat Mama.” There’s even a 16-second punk song, “Deihl, Three Years Later.”The band’s strength lies in lead guitarist/vocalist/lyricist Ian Hummel, who is the creative force behind the band. The bands’ current line up is different from the one featured on the album. The new group features Colin Valek or “the Fonz” on bass and Jim Downing or “Stomp Winchester” on drums. Instead, the album features Paul Abbot on drums and bass, with Rob Pilic adding electric guitar on some tracks. The Poop House experience is incomplete without a live show. Having recently performed at the Northberg Tavern on the corner of Woodruff Avenue and High Street, the band is appearing regularly all over the campus and Columbus area. The band truly gets into their performances, throwing in random covers – done Poop House style – and even ocassionally breaking into something they call the Jug Band. The Jug Band consists of Hummel on lead acoustic guitar, Downing on washboard and Valek on stand-up washtub bass (imagine an upside down aluminum washtub with a broom hand jutting out of the top, to which a single string is attached). Poop House Reilly is one of the lesser known bands in Columbus, but they feature some of the greatest talent around. You’ll have the chance to see one of the best shows in Columbus tonight at Andymann’s Tree House in Grandview. They will also be appearing again at the Northberg Tavern on Nov. 15. The show is some of the most fun you can have, the cover is always cheap, and the beer tastes the same and is cheaper than one of these crappy dance clubs people are so fond of. Go see Poop House Reilly. Bring your friends and check out one of our fair city’s most entertaining and creative bands.
