The No. 22 Ohio State (20-6 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) baseball team had a very strange evening, losing in a suspended game 5-4 to Wright State (14-13 overall).
Light standards were producing strobe effects. The power went out three times on the two teams and 600-plus fans in attendance.
“I don’t know what happened to the lights,” said OSU coach Bob Todd.
The game fell apart early for OSU, trailing 1-0 in the third inning. Starter Kevin Wynk gave up two walks before giving up a three-run shot to Lance Links who put Wright State up 4-0. Wynk who is battling with Josh Newman for the fourth spot in the rotation
“Still experimenting, but Wynk didn’t help himself,” Todd said. “Home runs happen, but the thing that bothered me was the walks.”
OSU rallied in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Mike Harris singled with one out, and after center fielder Mike Check flied out to center, Nick Swisher walked to put runners on first and second. Cleanup man Doug Deeds then cleared the bases with a two-run double, Deeds had three RBI on the night. John Mayor followed scoring Deeds with a single that made the score 4-3.
In the top of the fourth Jason Bullens relieved Wynk who gave up four earned runs in three innings. Bullens subsequently loaded the bases, and Wright State pinch hitter Chris Tuttle drove home a run with single. The bases were still loaded with Wright State up 5-3. Chris Ranstead helped OSU out as he lined out to Mike Harris who flipped to Trent McIlvain for the double play.
After six innings Wright State still led 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, catcher Joe Wilkins led off with a walk, McIlvain flied to center followed by a Harris single. Harris had three hits in the game and a run scored. Check struck out, and first baseman Swisher was intentionally walked. The bases were juiced for Deeds who gave up his body by getting hit by a pitch driving in Wilkins, closing the gap to 5-4.
However, John Mayor could not keep the rally alive as he lined out to center ending the threat.
Wright State starter Chris Bedford was solid going seven innings and giving up four runs for the win.
The eighth inning was when the light standards forgot that they were lighting a baseball field and not a techno concert. Blackouts suspended the game for 40 minutes before play resumed.
The lights came back on and fans could see OSU try to start another rally. Christian Snavely walked and advanced to second on a Doug Pettorini base hit. However, Eric Oberding, who came in for starter Chris Bedford, struck out two of the next three batters to end the rally.
Wright State would score in the top of the ninth, but the California’s power shortages have apparently hit closer to home as the power went out for the third and final time. The game was suspended, and for all purposes it will count as an OSU loss.
