Young adults from all over the country come to the Ohio State University to participate in the dance program since it is considered one of the best in the country.
Tomorrow through Saturday, those students will showcase their talents during the OSU Dance spring performance in the Sullivant Hall Theatre.
The spring dance performance is a variety of undergraduate senior thesis projects as well as other graduate and undergraduate works. The evening production includes works by student choreographers Stephanie Bloom, Elisha Clark, Erin Carlisle and Lauren Griffin, Keena Ferfguson and Michelle Hall, Mariesha Griffin, Carrie Hauser, Lisa Julian, Karl Rogers, Afalia Tribune, Jessica Tupa, Chantal Williams, Ann Yee and the III Fitness performance art collective.
There is an audition to decide who will perform in the pieces. Mostly the choreographers pick their own dancers from people they have performed with before or seen perform in other productions. After many rehearsals and endless nights, they audition in front of faculty members of the department. Dedication becomes even more intense after they know that their piece will be used.
All of the pieces are completely student run, from choreography and dancing to lighting.
Lisa Julian is a senior from Pittsburgh who chose OSU for its renowned dance program. She discussed the differences between the many kinds and ranges of genres that will be presented at the performance.
“My dance isn’t as deep as most modern dance, its more about the dancing and the music. It has a fusion of many different styles from modern, ballet and a lot of jazz,” Julian said. “There are so many different styles showcased at the performance. You will see African-American based culture and mine will portray more of a jazzy to house-techno version.”
Tickets for the May 3-5 performances are $4, available at the door of Sullivant Hall.
