Jan Kronmiller has been recommended for appointment as the new dean of the Ohio State College of Dentistry by Vice President and Provost Ed Ray.

“In searching for a new dean of the College of Dentistry, we felt it was important to find someone with established credentials as an administrator, a person with good people and management skills, and who was established as an outstanding teacher and scholar,” Ray said.

President William “Brit” Kirwan will submit Kronmiller’s name to the Board of Trustees at the Aug. 29 meeting for approval.

Kronmiller serves as chair of the Department of Orthodontics at Oregon Health Sciences University’s School of Dentistry. He has also served as a professor since 1993, teaching in the pre-doctoral and graduate programs at OHSU’s dental school.

Kronmiller has received numerous honors, including being named a fellow by both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He has also been awarded the National Institute of Health’s National Research Service Award and Individual Physician Scientist Award.

Attending Ohio State in the 1970s, Kronmiller earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a doctorate of dental science. He also holds a doctorate in biomedical sciences from the University of Connecticut and is certified in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.

Before joining OHSU, Kronmiller served as head of orthodontics at the University of Kentucky and as an assistant professor of pediatric dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh. He also worked in private practice for several years.

Kronmiller will replace Henry Fields, who has served as dean for the past 10 years. Ray said Fields indicated at the beginning of the 1999/2000 academic year that he did not wish to return as dean. The university spent almost a year conducting a national search for Fields’ replacement.
