More than 600 community leaders are expected to gather today for the National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, held at the Hilton Columbus, celebrating corporate, community and student leaders for their commitment to philanthropy in Columbus.
The event sponsored by the Central Ohio chapter of the Association of Fund-raising Professionals, features Andy Geiger, Ohio State athletics director, as the keynote speaker.
“He is known throughout the community for his philanthropy support,” said Jill Easterling, National Philanthropy Day co-chair. “He sets an example for both the business world and his family. He is changing his world, starting with his family.”
Geiger will be speaking on “Changing the World With a Giving Heart,” this year’s National Philanthropy Day theme. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the advancement of individuals in philanthropy and provide partial college scholarships for high school seniors.
Each year the chapter recognizes outstanding individuals and corporations whose philanthropy has improved the quality of life for those in Central Ohio. Corporations must be nominated for awards and chosen by a panel of judges, according to a statement by the chapter.
Columbus corporations and individuals being honored include David and Lorraine Thomas, senior chairman of the board and founder of Wendy’s International, Inc., Schottenstein’s/Value City Dept. Store, The Media Group, Barbara Fergus of Midwestern Auto Group and Norma J. Sexton, chief development officer of Easter Seals Central & Southeast Ohio, Inc.
“The event recognizes individuals and corporations who make a difference in Columbus,” Easterling said.
Corporations that plan on being in attendance include The United Way, Children’s Hospital, Mount Carmel and BalletMet. Both profit and not-for-profit organizations will be in attendance, Easterling said.
Also speaking at the event will be those who have benefited from not-for-profits and two college scholarships will be awarded to local high school students for their essays on the importance of philanthropy.
The AFP includes more than 23,000 members in 157 chapters across North America. The association fosters the development and growth of fund raising professionals, works to advance philanthropy and volunteerism and promotes high ethical standards for the fund-raising profession, according a statement.
