Amidst the rising popularity of its latest release, the onslaught of a large arena tour and the loss of bassist Mikey Welsh, power pop band Weezer managed to please area fans once again, this time filling the Schottenstein arena on Dec. 5.
With opening bands Jimmy Eat World and Tenacious D in tow, along with a fill-in bassist, the show was sure to please fans of many diverse styles.
Fans of rock and punk enjoyed the fast-paced set of the somewhat unknown quartet Jimmy Eat World. The eccentric fans of Tenacious D were also on cue, urging on the duo’s immature antics and lyrics.
After quite a wait between bands, Weezer mounted the stage in a mysterious yellow haze, playing a new song from its upcoming fourth album. Alternating tracks from the band’s latest release and upcoming album, the group displayed a new level of innovation for its live show.
Since the group’s first release in 1994, they have ridden a roller-coaster of fame and criticism for their mixture of heartfelt lyrics and kitschy pop sounds.
Sadly, “Tired of Sex” was the only track played from Weezer’s critically-acclaimed second album “Pinkerton,” but classic favorites from its debut album, such as “Buddy Holly” and “Only In Dreams,” were played with the same enthusiasm as when they were chart toppers.
Although it was a short set, Weezer pleased old fans and young fans alike.
