Head Coach

Jerzy Engel – Engel has led Poland to their first World Cup in 16 years. The former Polish goalkeeper was given little chance when taking the job as Polish coach two-and-a-half years ago, now Engel is in talks of an extension. With one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Engel has the opportunity to take chances with his squad, however the coach plays a conservative lineup, keeping his team close in many games.

Key Players

Jerzy Dudek – The highest paid goalkeeper in the world must prove his worth in Group D play. The Liverpool goalkeeper makes impossible saves look routine, giving his coach the option of pushing players out of the back. There doesn’t seem to be any flaws in his ability, his skills, his game.

Emmanuel Olisadebe – Nigerian-born Olisadebe is the best attacker on the Polish side. Powerful, quick and gifted with finishing ability make the forward a most admirable opponent. In 14 games with Poland, he has 10 goals.

Overview

Goalkeeping

Dudek is the one and only goalkeeper that Poland will play. His ability to keep his team, perhaps being overmatched, in games will be crucial. Has much big-game experience with Liverpool.

Defense

The defense should be built around steady veteran defender Tomasz Waldoch. His play has not deteriorated in the years he has been with the Polish squad.

Coming out of the back will be outside defender Tomasz Klos. His attacking ability will be missed by opposing outside mids and defenders.

Tomasz Hajto will be conservative in the central defense.

Midfield

Piotr Swierczewski orchestrates the buildup for his side. His leadership and experience will be helpful for a squad that has not made a World Cup appearance in 16 years. The midfield concedes the attack to the frontline.

Forwards

Olisadebe will not be able to roam free during Group D play. He must depend on his instincts for goal opportunities. He is the one forward that will draw most of the attention of opposing defenses.
