A professor of the College of Arts at Ohio State died last week of cancer.

James Hutchens, chairman of the Department of Art Education, died Wednesday of stomach cancer. He was 54.

An internationally-known artist, Hutchens had been published numerous times and was well-known for his work. His areas of expertise were public arts policy, contemporary art and art education.

Hutchens, a native of High Point, N.C., began his career at OSU in 1979 after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University. He then went on to pursue a master’s in visual arts from Georgia State University and a doctorate from Florida State University.

Hutchens served as chairman of the department since 1996. He was also named associate dean of research and professional development in July. He was affiliated with the John Glenn Institute for Public Policy as a representative for art education.

He had left Ohio State for a brief period of time in the early 1990s to serve as chairman at the Department of Art at Appalachian State University.

A memorial service was held Saturday for Hutchens.
