Activists from the Association of Women Students and the Feminist Legal Action Group staged a rally on The Oval yesterday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and to increase awareness of abortion rights issues.
In addition to passing out literature, the groups posted abortion rights signs around campus and staged a mock fight between President Bush and a uterus. The signs, which were made with clothing hangers, featured slogans such as “This is not a surgical instrument.”
The activists — many of whom are students here at Ohio State — spoke with those passing by about why they percieve the present moment to be so crucial to the future of Roe vs. Wade.
“Roe vs. Wade is under attack. It’s in the most danger it has been in since it was passed 30 years ago,” said Chana Wolfson, a junior in Spanish and Hebrew.
The U.S. Supreme Court is divided, with only a 5-4 majority in favor of abortion rights. Bush is likely to have the oppurtunity to replace at least one, if not more, of the justices who have supported Roe vs. Wade in the past.
“There are changes at all levels of government under this administration — everything from cutting federal funding for safe sex education to reducing the availabillity of birth control in the developing world,” said Bryan Miller, a sophomore in social work.
The activists will put on a benefit show entitled “Rock for Choice” at 8 p.m. tonight at Little Brothers, 1100 N. High St.
