Today, the casting crew for TV’s hit series “The Bachelor” will be hosting open-call auditions for a new reality movie.
The new movie, targeting a cast of college pals with diverse personalities, seeks to capture the essence of the college experience amidst the backdrop of spring break. Those who win the role will receive a paid spring vacation in Mexico, along with potential fame.
Spring Break Productions, Inc’s “Spring Break: The Movie,” will be released by Universal Pictures next summer. The casting crew from Next Entertainment has traveled to Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado and Ohio, looking for about eight people to sponsor on the trip.
“Ohio is the state farthest east that we picked. One of the reasons why we picked west-coast schools: One element in the show was going to be a road trip to Mexico, but that may be a trek for Ohio,” said Kate DiRanna, a Los Angeles spokeswoman for mPRm Public Relations.
While many students are unaware about the casting crew’s arrival, the general response seems highly positive. Jerry Baxtron, a senior in finance, has spent the past year gaining acting experience and has considered appearing on a reality show.
“Well, I mean, I’ve thought about it a lot lately. I don’t think I’d be uncomfortable with it. I love being around people,” Baxtron said.
As students compete for the role with others mainly located on the West Coast, casting director Robyn Kass is optimistic about the students at OSU.
“I’m excited about coming to Ohio State; it’s such a big campus. Some of my staff have been recruiting. They said campus is huge, which is definitely a bonus for us,” Kass said.
Kass has worked on reality shows for several years. While casting for a broad range of shows including “Big Brother 4” and other school’s for “Spring Break: The Movie,” Kass encounters a wide variety of people.
“I’ve been doing casting for six to seven years. It’s still much more enjoyable (casting for reality shows) than casting for movies. You get real people who are really fun-loving and excited about the project,” Kass said.
DiRanna said several factors came into play when considering OSU’s potential candidates for the show. OSU’s strong showing in the news with riots and football victories assisted in targeting the Midwestern university.
“If you look at the list of schools that we’ve looked at, we’re looking at schools that have school camaraderie. Part of spring break is to be in college and go on spring break, as opposed to kids in an apartment who are going on a trip,” DiRanna said. “What will find its way in the production of the show is the school aspect, especially for Ohio people going to Mexico.”
Kass and DiRanna said they are looking for candidates who won’t temper their behaviors for the audience.
“Any time you’re casting a TV reality series, the show depends on the cast,” DiRanna said.”The movie is going to depend on the cast of stars. We have to rely on relatively unknown people. Strong personalities makes a good viewing.”
The casting crew is looking for candidates with charisma and a fun-loving spirit.
“We want candidates who will not just order from Dominoes the whole time, but who will jump into the adventure with both feet. If you have cameras around you 24-7, it can be pretty jarring — you have to get comfortable with it at some point,” DiRanna said.
Baxtron doesn’t think he’ll alter his behaviors on the show.
“We’d just basically do the type of things I don’t get to do when I’m in Ohio,” he said. “The idea of being in a movie really excites me — not that going to Mexico isn’t cool, but being in a movie is awesome.”
Open-call auditions will be held from 2-8 p.m today on the second floor lounge of the Ohio Union.
