Aaron Maggied discovered electronics, books and clothing were stolen from his residence hall room when he returned from winter break.
He was suprised to find the thief also took his backpack and said he thinks it may have even used it to tranport the stolen property.
Four residence hall rooms located in Baker Hall East were robbed sometime during the three weeks of winter break. Each of the rooms were once floor study halls and have been converted into residence hall rooms.
The doors are not equipped with the routine deadbolt found on all other rooms in the building.
“I don’t feel safe. I would like to see a deadbolt on my door,” Maggied said.
Evidence of forced entry was found in each room that reported stolen property.
The robbed residents have been assured new locks will be placed on their doors, but Maggied said, “It’s already one and one-half weeks too late.”
Tim Alston, a junior in engineering, found $1,500 worth of property missing.
“I’m not that worried when it’s school time because too many people are here, as long as it’s done by spring break,” Alston said.
“We are working to investigate this theft,” said Jenny Klein, director of Residence Life.
Klein said the locks will be installed within the next two weeks.
No reason was offered as to why the converted rooms were not originally equipped with a deadbolt. According to Baker East Hall Director Jennifer Irwin-Skala, the residence hall is locked up over break.
“The only people with access are housekeepers, maintenance and university employees approved by Klein,” Irwin-Skala said.
Alston said the only thing his hall director told him was to call the police. Alston and Maggied both filed a police report with University Police, but they said they doubt their belongings will be recovered.
Alston also sought the help of the Student Advocacy Center. He was advised to consult his homeowners insurance policy and was told it was possible the university would cover his deductible.
Alston found his deductible was too high for the amount of property stolen.
“I would like the university to do something, but they say they are not responsible,” Alston said.
According to OSU Police Chief Ron Michalec, there are no leads regarding the robbery.
