A Franklin County jury recommended James T. Conway III receive the death penalty for the murder of Ohio State student Jason Gervais.

The murder took place Jan. 18, 2002, in the parking lot of the Dockside Dolls strip club. Gervais and some friends were at the club celebrating the start of a new business.

A fight broke out between rival gangs, one of which Conway is the alleged leader. Gervais, who was not involved with either gang, was shot and killed by Conway.

According to local media, the jury recommended Friday that Conway be put to death. Conway was found guilty of aggravated murder in late January. The sentencing will be carried out on Feb. 18 by Common Pleas Judge Patrick McGrath.

“I think what bothers us the most as a family is how unnecessary and how avoidable this whole tragedy was,” said Dale Gervais, Jason’s father.
