Showing no ill effects from losing starting forward LaToya Turner to a fractured arm, the No. 25 Ohio State women’s basketball team (17-5, 8-3 Big Ten) rolled to a 63-40 win over Wisconsin (7-15, 4-7) before 6,257 fans yesterday at the Schottenstein Center.
With the win, OSU improves to 12-0 at home on the season.
The Buckeyes will lose Turner for four to six weeks. The injury, Turner’s third in her OSU career, occurred during the Minnesota game on Thursday. She was redshirted last season after having arthroscopic knee surgery, and she missed the majority of the 2000-01 season after tearing a ligament in her left knee.
Yesterday, forward D’wan Shackleford took Turner’s place in the starting lineup. Shackleford is no stranger to the role of starter.
“It helped being a starter in the past,” Shackleford said. “I know my role coming off the bench or starting.”
She finished the game with eight points.
At the beginning of the game, the Badgers got off to a quick start, thanks to the inside presence of center Emily Ashbaugh.
The Buckeyes soon picked up their defensive pressure, forcing the Badgers into turnovers.
OSU took its first lead of the game at 14-13 and then exploded with an 18-2 run to take a 26-13 lead. The run was fueled by back-to-back three-pointers by guards Caity Matter and Didi Reynolds.
The Buckeyes also got a lift from forward Erika Christenson as she helped out on the inside. Christenson closed out the first half when she hit a lay-up at the buzzer to give OSU a 32-17 lead.
OSU coach Jim Foster was pleased with Christenson’s play.
“We were much more physical with Erika in the game,” Foster said. “She has a good understanding of who she is as a player.”
The second half started with Matter hitting two three-pointers to give OSU a 20-point lead.
Wisconsin then went on a 11-0 run to get back in the game and cut the lead to nine.
Matter, who was just 1-5 in the first half from the three-point line, again hit consecutive treys to push the lead back to 50-33. She finished with a team-high 17 points.
“I started taking regular three-point shots, not NBA-range three-pointers,” Matter said.
OSU cruised from then on.
The Buckeyes forced the Badgers into 26 turnovers and recorded 14 steals. Guard Kim Wilburn led the team with three steals.
“Our backcourt has a lot of quickness, and we try to use that to our advantage,” Wilburn said.
Badgers coach Jane Albright also noticed OSU’s speed.
“Their zone is full of a lot of quickness and speed,” Albright said. “You have to make quick decisions, and we didn’t do that.”
