Last week another bar closed down on campus. Notal’s Too shut its doors as a result of several liquor license violations — including serving a minor — over the last year and a half.
Now, students who want a place to hang out near campus will find only three bars located on High Street between 10th Avenue and 17th Avenue: Four Kegs, Bernie’s and Mama’s Pasta and Brew.
First, Maverick’s and Sloopy’s disappeared from the area in 1998. Then came the Campus Partners initiated demolition of a handful of campus favorites in 2001. One by one, others started taking down the “We are open” signs and closing their doors forever.
Now some students are upset with the lack of places to go on High Street. No longer will they be able to have fun drinking at their favorite bars, and the good old times have gone away.
These students mostly blame the police for the closings. They imply if it weren’t for the overbearing cops who try to pin down underage drinkers at the bars, then High Street would still be alive with an exciting college atmosphere. Instead, High Street has become a dreary, boring place that most students want to escape.
But students should stop complaining about their misfortune. The police are not the ones to blame. They are not the ones twisting bartenders’ arms to serve minors, nor are they forcing the servers to stop checking IDs.
These students need to stop pointing fingers. Instead, they should start looking at themselves. When underage students enter a bar looking for a night of drunken fun, they are putting the bars at risk of losing their licenses. If someone underage is caught accepting a drink from a bartender, the bar could be cited for serving underage, a violation that leads to license suspension.
These students don’t understand the consequences of their actions and have no idea that the bar could close down in the future. If the bar does become an empty room with only a few chairs and tables as remnants of the once lively hot spot, the same students start whining about how there’s not enough bars on campus.
If they had been wise at the beginning, they wouldn’t have tried drinking at the bars. But many students like this are selfish. Unfortunately, they didn’t think how these selfish acts could ruin it for the rest of the students who drink legally and responsibly.
