The Residence Hall Advisory Council is preparing for next year with new leadership.

Andrew Long was elected president of the executive board for the upcoming school year Tuesday night.

RHAC held its annual executive board elections during a general body meeting in Smith Laboratory. Elections were cut short, filling only three of the seven positions, because of a lack of voting members in the later hours of the meeting.

Long, a sophomore in personalized program in video production, spent this year as treasurer of the executive board and will assume his new position June 15. He began his membership in the organization last year and since then was involved in updating the RHAC Web site. In his nomination speech he described the goals he would like to accomplish as president.

“I would like to improve USG relations. We need to work together and increase communication between organizations,” he said.

“I would also like to do a wider variety of advertising in the residence halls to get our programs out and known to the students.”

Long’s focus for his presidential year is to encourage ongoing programs and to improve involvement.

“I would like to run things a little more decisively,” he said.

Long ran against Tim Shea, a freshman in pre-business. After his defeat, Shea ran for vice president and was elected. He spent the first half of last year as a business liaison in the organization and became vice president after a position opened.

“I want to make sure the executive board stays in the same direction this year. I want everyone in residence halls to know what RHAC is,” he said.

Kim Kushner, an undecided freshman, was voted the director of social and educational programming. She said she is excited to develop and organize new programs and events students would be interested in attending, including a chicken-wing eating contest.

“I would like to have fun events that the campus would really want to go to,” she said.

Laurie Lengen, a sophomore in business, is the president this year. She expressed her enthusiasm for the newly elected candidates.

“I’m really excited. I look forward to see what they do,” she said.

Joe Gilroy, a senior in English and linguistics, is coming back for his second year as the national communications coordinator for RHAC. He was nominated and elected last winter quarter.

“I like RHAC because it gives the opportunity for students to fall in love with Ohio State. We are able to put on a lot of programs that effect student careers,” Shea said.
