Scarlet and gray named OSU colors

April 1878: Though the exact date has never been determined, scarlet and gray were most likely choosen this month as the official school colors. Orange and black were first chosen as the university’s colors; however, those already belonged to Princeton, and OSU wanted its own. A colors committee was selected which chose scarlet and gray. The three members of the committee divided the sample scarlet and gray swatches between them. Curtis Howard preserved his samples and gave the samples back to the university to have. These swatches are on display in OSU’s archives building.

Cash gift benefits Buckeye students

April 19, 1948: OSU accepted the gift of $100,000 to establish the Simon Lazarus Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship benefits mainly students in the Fischer College of Business, but is also awarded to students in other fields.

Center flourishes after 100+ years

April 17, 1882: Ohio General Assembly voted to form an agricultural experiment station at Ohio State in Columbus. The facilities later moved to Wooster. It continues to be the premier agricultural research site in Ohio.
