The Lantern’s recent article “Court Holds Firm on School Funding” got the story backwards. It’s true that Ohio’s Supreme Court has once again held that our system of funding schools violates our state constitution.
However, Ohio legislators have never responded to the court’s original demand that they change the inequitable property tax formula that brought about the suit to begin with.
The Supreme Court’s Republican majority still says the system violates the law, but they now refuse to give the plaintiffs any means of enforcing the ruling. “Court Chickens Out on School Funding” would have been a far more apt headline – a right without a remedy is worthless.
