After reading the Feb.16 article “New union to cost $103M,” I was dismayed to hear of another high profile construction project on campus. As a DJ at OSU’s student radio, The Underground, and a part-time worker in construction and remodeling, I understand the necessity of maintaining and remodeling buildings. I also understand the intelligence in staggering these major projects.
Not only does taking on too many major projects in such a short time create an undue financial burden, but it creates an unfriendly environment for anyone who uses those facilities. The plans to renovate The Union, Main Library, and The Oval at the same time will only add to the current chaos of navigating construction sites and the blasting of jackhammers.
These OSU icons do need to be maintained and remodeled to add to the appeal and beauty of OSU’s campus, but because most of these projects will be completed after the current students have graduated, I believe today’s students deserve some relief from the onslaught of bulldozers and fences that seem to overwhelm our campus at times. I can only hope that the OSU administration will slow this construction frenzy before I need to wear a hard hat on campus.
