Allowing students to opt out of fees that may be added for Ohio State’s expanded recreational facilities is an interesting idea, particularly in view of recently raised tuition prices.
I am not sure allowing employees to opt out of a proposed membership fee and forgo the gym access that has long been a part of working here is a good deal. This option would actually be a loss for faculty and staff.
Many employees bargain collectively for their terms and conditions of employment. Major changes in wages and benefits are negotiated.
Some really bad things happen to employees and students who are not in a position socially to bargain. Sometimes on a twisted notion of fairness, employers reach out to workers without protection or benefits as a means of watering existing deals or cheapening the value of labor.
It is important to think carefully about fairness and organize when necessary. I do not recommend employees or students opt out of their gym access.
